Residents of the Spera district in the southeastern province of Khost report hearing jets bombing mountainous areas. They believe US forces are fighting Taleban insurgents. Rasul Din, a resident of the Tanai district, said on January 16 that he had heard jet fighters in the air during the afternoon, followed by loud explosions in the area nearby. Another resident, Abdul Wali, said he heard thundering explosions which continued from 12 noon to 3 pm, as if B-52 bombers were overflying the area. The commander of the provincial army brigade in Khost, Ikram Samih said insurgents attacked a military checkpoint in the village of Raiz near the Pakistani border.
