Ninety-nine Taleban and Hizb-e-Islami loyalists joined the central government on February 28, officials said. The head of the Peace and Reconciliation Commission, Sibghatullah Mujaddidi said that the group comprised former rebel commanders from Paktia, Khost, Kandahar, Ghazni, Faryab, Logar and Herat provinces. Addressing the reconciliation ceremony, the Mujaddidi said he was happy that so many opponents of the government had given up armed resistance and surrendered their weapons since his commission was established. “I hope those who are still opposing the government will join the government through this commission and take part in reconstructing their war-torn country,” he said.
