Chairing a Central Committee meeting of the Baath party, President Bashar al-Assad said the party embraced freedom, criticism and transparency, the independent news website All4Syria reported on April 26.

Assad called on the party’s top leaders to engage with the Syrian people’s concerns and find solutions to their problems.

He also encouraged the Baath party to speak out against wrongdoings by members so as to “ensure that the party better serves the people”.

The president also discussed regional issues, saying Syria wanted to develop its relations with other Arab states and to push for a just and comprehensive peace. He said the Arab summit which Damascus hosted in March had united the Arab nations.

Finally, he cautioned Arab states against turning to “foreign bodies”.
