At the prosecutor's request, on Monday June 23 Trial Chamber I will hold a closed hearing on protective measures for witnesses which, under Rule 67(A), must be taken “prior to the commencement of the trial.” Thus the trial of Gen. Blaskic will begin on Tuesday June 24, at 9.30am.

Trial Chamber I will be composed of Judges Claude Jorda (presiding) Fuad Riad and Mohamed Shahabuddeen. Judge Shahabuddeen, one of the judges newly elected on May 20, 1997, has joined the Tribunal to replace Judge Jules Deschenes, who recently resigned for health reasons.

Judge Shahabuddeen (66) has held many judicial and governmental positions in Guyana, including those of Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs. He has also served as a judge in the International Court of Justice from 1988 to February 1997, and has worked as an arbitrator and consultant in international law. Judge Shahabuddeen is a member of the Institut de Droit International and of the Société Francaise de Droit International. He has published numerous books and articles.
