British forces killed a senior al-Qaeda senior figure on September 25, a UK military spokesman said. The spokesman said Omar al-Faruq died after the house in which he was hiding out in Basra was surrounded by about 250 British soldiers. Al-Faruq, accused of leading al-Qaeda in Southeast Asia, was arrested by the Indonesian authorities in 2002. He fled from a US detention facility at the Baghram airbase in Afghanistan a year ago.
