The pro-government news website Al-Jamal looked this week at whether Syria might play a role in solving Iran’s dispute with the West.

In an article published on July 26, the website said Syria had emerged as a diplomatic player in the international arena, noting that its help had been sought in resolving the Lebanese political crisis earlier this year, and in addressing problems in Iraq.

Given the various options that might be used in the nuclear dispute – negotiations, sanctions or military intervention - Al-Jamal said, "Syria has an opportunity to play a successful role.”

According to the website, Tehran has welcomed Syrian president Bashar al-Assad’s attempts to discuss Iran’s problems.

Noting the “many threats and dangers” facing Iran, Al-Jamal recalled the situation in Lebanon, where it claimed Syrian mediation broke the political stalemate.
