A lower court has fined the privately-owned Afghan TV 70,000 afghani 1400 US dollars for airing un-Islamic broadcasts. The station owner, Ahmad Shah Afghanzai, rejected the court’s decision, which was handed down on February 27, and said he would appeal to a higher court. A committee within the ministry of information, culture and tourism that monitors television stations had previously recommended a 1,000 dollar fine for the Kabul-based station for broadcasting material deemed immoral and un-Islamic.
