As prices of real estate shoot up in Damascus, even graves are becoming more and more expensive. Many Syrians are buying their burial plots ahead of time outside Damascus or on the black market.
The price of a plot in Damascus can be 10,000 US dollars, or up to 3,300 dollars out of town, because the graveyards are full. Relatives are reselling plots five years after a burial and gravediggers have developed a sideline as middlemen between buyers and sellers.
