He is the first-and so far the only-person who has confessed. He was also the first accused to be sentenced as well as the first to have his original sentence reduced by half at appeal. He has now become the first to be transferred from the Detention Unit to prison in a country that has reached an agreement with the Tribunal on the serving of sentences. Along with Norway, such agreements were also signed by Italy and Finland and a further ten countries expressed their readiness to put their prison resources at the Tribunal's disposal.
Given that the time he spent in custody after his arrest in March 1996 counts towards his sentence--the first month he spent in the Federal Republic of Yugoslavia and the rest in the Tribunal's Detention Unit-Erdemovic will be out no later than March 2001.
