On May 26, the Tajik president appointed Bobokhon Mahmadov ambassador to Uzbekistan. Mahmadov, until now a departmental head in the presidential administration, replaces Gulomjon Mirzoev, who is retiring.

Mahmadov is an experienced politician who observers say has the ability to ease the fraught Tajik-Uzbek relationship. He climbed his way up the Communist Party hierarchy in Soviet times, and served for a long time as Tajik minister of communications and culture.
