A former mujahedin militia commander of the Jamiat-e-Islami faction led by former President Burhanuddin Rabbani was shot dead in an ambush by armed men in the Tagab district of the northern province of Kapisa on December 17. Mohammad Akbar, head of the crime control branch at provincial police headquarters, said Mullah Mohammad Hussain, 50, was shot dead by a group of armed men while travelling. The official said the murder could have been motivated by past factional hostilities or political differences, but he did not say anything about the political groups which might be involved.
