The Syrian government is keeping a close eye on shops to ensure they do not overcharge or sell expired items over the holiday period, according to a December 16 report in Al-Wihda daily.

The pro-government newspaper reported that the trade ministry had instructed its local offices to monitor the prices of transport, food, clothes and other items to ensure that items are clearly labelled during Eid al-Adha, Christmas and the New Year. The ministry is also working to prevent black market sales of products and checking to ensure food is not sold beyond its expiry date.
