Mishel Tammo, leader of the outlawed Kurdish party Mustaqbal, showed up in court this week after disappearing earlier this month, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights reported on August 26.

Tammo appeared a hearing in Damascus, where he was charged with crimes including inciting violence, weakening national sentiments, inciting sectarianism, publishing false news and spreading false or exaggerated information.

He denied the charges, saying his aim is to end discriminatory policies against Kurds in Syria, according to the organisation.

Tammo was reported missing on August 15, when he was seized by security forces, said the organisation. He is being held in Adra prison in the capital.

The human rights group called for his release.
