One person was killed and 22 were injured in an explosion in the southeastern province of Khost on January 14. Provincial security officials said the explosives were placed in a basket in the centre of the provincial capital, Khost city, and detonated by remote control. The injured people, who are reported to be in critical condition, were taken to the international military hospital in the province. No one has claimed responsibility for the attack, and security officials have not yet identified the perpetrators. Khost is the third biggest US military base in Afghanistan, after Kandahar and Bagram.
