Ahtam Shaimardanov has become the third candidate to be nominated by the non-government Human Rights Alliance of Uzbekistan to stand in the country’s presidential election this December. Shaimardanov, a 54-year old human rights activist from Chirchik near Tashkent, will use his campaign to focus on encouraging political and civil activism, creating a robust civil society and tackling environmental problems. The human rights group has already put Jahongir Shosalimov and Abdullo Tojiboy Oghli forward even though it is too early for them to register as candidates and start campaigning.
