The Wolesi Jirga, the lower house of parliament, on May 16 began discussions on four nominees for the Supreme Court proposed by the Afghan president. The four are Ali Nasimi, Mohammad Omar Mohmand, Maulawi Mohammad Qasem and Shah Ali Shahristani. The nominees were introduced to the house by deputy chief secretary Sadiq Mudabir and members later began debating the candidates’ past records. Some were critical of the perfomance of the Supreme Court itself. The house will approve or reject the nominated judges within the next few days.
