Two Islamic prisoners died recently after being tortured at security service detention centres, according to separate accounts published on January 12 on the London-based Syrian Human Rights Committee, SHRC website.

The organisation said it had received a letter from an informed source reporting that Muhammad Aman al-Shawa, a maths teacher at a secondary school in the eastern town of Dayr al-Zawr, died after being tortured at a military interrogation centre.

SHRC also published a report claiming that Yusuf Jabbuli of Aleppo, who was arrested by intelligence agents last month, died after being tortured in a similar facility. The source told the group that Jabbuli’s body had been handed back to his family.

The group has called for an investigation into the deaths.
