Russia should play a more significant role in the Middle East and push the peace process forward, said an October 17 op-ed article in the official newspaper Al-Baath.

Shawkat Abu Fakher wrote that the recent positive changes in the world would allow Russia to play a broader role in the Middle East and use its good relations with world powers and the parties to the Arab-Israeli conflict to persuade them to resume the peace process.

He said that the Russians had supported peace in the region in the past and now that Moscow had “regained its role and influence” in the world, it should extend its clout to the region as well.

The columnist urged Russia to use its influence to force the “extremist” Israeli government to accept the peace conditions agreed upon by the international community.
