Polluted sewage water is being used to irrigate agricultural crops, the pro-government website Syria Steps reported on May 24.

The report said hospitals were constantly treating patients for intestinal disorders caused by contaminated vegetables and herbs. It said vegetables tested in labs were found to contain 24 times the maximum permissible amount of lead.

Syria does not have enough sewage treatment facilities and according to Syria Steps. the government has not addressed the problem adequately, allowing farmers to continue using polluted water.

The report also said laws prohibiting the use of polluted water are not being enforced. Individuals convicted under the laws should face up to six months in prison or fines of up to 50,000 lira (1,000 US dollars).
