Syria Wants Greater Share of Iraq's Wealth
Syria Media Report, 29-Aug-08
The pro-government website Syria Steps complained on August 27 that unlike its neighbours, Syria is seeing little benefit from Iraq’s new oil wealth.
Syria Steps said Jordan and Lebanon have received subsidised oil from Iraq, which is also building economic relations with its other neighbours – Iran, Kuwait and Turkey. The report said that while Syria has more agreements in place with Iraq than with any other country, Baghdad is now slowing down economic cooperation between the two nations.
According to the website, Iraqi-Syrian trade totals just one billion US dollars a year. It argued that Iraq should provide Syria with more construction contracts and subsidised oil, particularly as the country hosts 1.5 million Iraqi refugees.
