Iraqi minister of human rights, Wijdan Salim, has told Azzaman that an ongoing human rights conference organised by the United Nations in Geneva asked the Iraqi government to explain why the Saddam trial's chief judge has been replaced and why defence lawyers were excluded from court after they protested over the sacking. Meanwhile, the ministry has uncovered evidence that Iraqi detainees are being tortured in prison by militia members and police officers. Thirty-three police officers have lately been put on trial for abusing prisoners.
