UN Secretary General denounces new wave of attacks

United Nations Secretary General Kofi Annan has condemned the recent wave of deadly attacks in Afghanistan, calling them an unacceptable assault on the peace process. In a. statement, Annan urged all parties in Afghanistan to work in a spirit of national unity and reconciliation. Twenty people were killed and at least the same number wounded on January 16 when a motorcycle rider detonated explosives in a crowd attending a wrestling match in the Spin Boldak district of Kandahar provincew. Just before that, three Afghan soldiers and a civilian were killed in a blast targeting an army vehicle in the same province. The January 16 attacks came a day after a Canadian diplomat and two Afghans were killed in a Taleban suicide attack in Kandahar.
