Union Leader Warns of Inflation

Business union leader Husam al-Mansour has warned Baath party officials that low wages are not keeping pace with rising inflation.



Al-Watan newspaper reported on March 19 that al-Mansour told the 25th annual trade union conference that fuel prices had risen between 66 and 80 per cent, while food costs had risen between 20 and 80 per cent.



“We used to shy away from saying a certain percentage of people were living below the poverty line,” he said. “However, today we are part of this poverty. because our low wages are not enough to feed our family for more than half of the month.”
