Although 20 per cent of lawyers in Syria are female, only one woman heads a bar organisation, Al-Mezan magazine reports.

Last year, Amna Meni became the head of Latakia’s bar association, the first woman ever to be appointed to such a role, said an article in the pro-government magazine on February 1.

“Since the establishment of bar associations in Syria in 1972, no woman has been elected to a position of leadership,” said Muhammad Waled al-Tesh, president of the National Bar Association.

Women make up 9 per cent of judges, roughly 15 per cent of state attorneys and 20 per cent of general lawyers.
