The global financial crisis will continue to take its toll on Syrian workers in 2009, according to a February 14 report in pro-government magazine The Economy.

The magazine published the results of a survey in which 400 private sector employees were asked about their economic predictions for the coming year. Fifty-one per cent said they feared being fired, while 39 per cent said they worried about having to take a forced pay cut.

More than half said they didn’t expect any governmental intervention to protect workers.
