Lawmaker Bahaa al-Araji said the national assembly has presented a memorandum to the head of the Iraqi supreme court to clarify whether Arab and foreign lawyers defending former Iraqi leader Saddam Hussein entered Iraq without having obtained entry visas. He added that the lawyers entered Iraq on American planes without obtaining visas, which violates Iraq’s sovereignty and laws. Iraq is now run by laws that separate powers, he said, and the executive power has no right to interfere in judicial affairs. He threatened to take severe measures if the court does not respond to the memorandum. (Saddam and seven of his former deputies are on trial for crimes against humanity. They are accused of conducting mass torture and arrests and for murdering 148 people in Dijail in 1982.)
