President Kurmanbek Bakiev sacked Prosecutor General, Kambaraly Kongantiev, on March 19. Of all members of Bakiev’s administration, Kongantiev was regarded as one of the hardest-line advocates of a tough stance against the opposition. Opposition figures and relatives of six people killed when police opened fire on demonstration in the Aksy region in 2002 have repeatedly demanded his resignation. The president visited southern Kyrgyzstan on March 17 to take part in commemorations of the Aksy shooting and meet some opposition members.
