Efforts to brush up the Kyrgyz capital’s image are being resisted by traders whose kiosks are scheduled for removal.
The mayor’s office says the kiosks and wooden huts which are a feature of Bishkek are unsightly and do not fit in with urban renewal plans. Officials say these structures were built without planning permission and need to be either demolished of moved off the city’s main roads into sidestreets.
