Sikirica was arrested by SFOR troops on June 25 in Prijedor and was scheduled to make his initial appearance on June 30. His appearance had been postponed for one week due to "minor injuries" the defendant suffered during his arrest.
The injuries had come to light during a routine medical inspection on Sikirica shortly after his arrival at the UN detention centre. "It was decided by doctors that he gets those fixed-up first," a spokesman said.
Sikirica stands accused of two counts of genocide, three counts of crimes against humanity and two counts of violations of the laws and customs of war.
Charges of grave breaches of the Geneva Conventions, listed in the original indictment issued on July 25, 1995, have been dropped from the amended version now in place. The charges against Sikirica have now been brought in line with those against Dragan Kolundzija and Damir Dosen, both of whom are accused of crimes at the same camp.
The trial of Kolundzija and Dosen could begin before the end of this year and Chief Prosecutor, Carle del Ponte, has already indicated her intention to request that Sikirica join that trial.
