For the past nine years Syria’s president, Bashar al-Assad, has led the modernisation and development of the country, said a July 18 editorial in the state-run newspaper, Tishreen.

The nation was able to make progress without compromising Syria’s principles of social equality, wrote Samira al-Masalma on the occasion of the ninth anniversary of Assad taking the presidential oath.

Masalma said that the country’s achievements on the economic and political levels were due to people rallying behind the government and taking part in the development process.

The author added that the ongoing process of modernisation started by Assad was the sound response to the challenges faced by the country and ensured a prosperous future for Syria.

She added that development and change enforced national unity.
