The ministry of social affairs and labour has ordered pay rises for private-sector employees, the state-run SANA news agency reported on May 18.

Private-sector employees will receive raises of 1,300 lira per month plus five per cent of their current monthly wages, according to the SANA report. Employees of professional unions and housing, craft and consumer associations will get 25 per cent raises, and charity workers will receive an additional 1,500 lira every month.

A labour ministry official told SANA that the raises are expected to increase the living standards of private-sector workers.

Government employees were given 25 per cent pay rises earlier this month in an attempt to offset the increasing cost of fuel and food.
