Syrian Editorial Slams Western Interference in the Region

Samira Masalma, the daily’s editor-in-chief, criticised western countries for acting as if they had the “right of guardianship” over the region’s people and its fortunes.
She said that the Middle East had been “suffering” for a long time from other states intervening in countries’ national sovereignty.
Masalma detailed the different sorts of intervention practised by the West, including pitting countries against each other, in an apparent reference to the rift between Arab nations and Iran.
The author said that the West’s support for non-governmental organisations in a country without the knowledge of its government is considered to be a flagrant intervention in the sovereignty of that state.
Masalma called on all countries to respect the sovereignty of the region and understand its history and attributes, warning that interference could affect international peace and security.
