General Jamal Tahir, the Iraqi interior minister’s assistant for Kirkuk and Mosul, said that the ministry is failing to work properly with the police and security departments in Kirkuk. Tahir alleged that ministry officials were not attending to security in Kirkuk because they were aware the area is mainly Kurdish. He suggested that when the time came to start implementing the “normalisation project” for Kirkuk envisaged in the constitution, there would a rise in insurgent attacks aimed at destabilising the region.
