Russian foreign minister Sergey Lavrov was in Syria this week in an attempt to push the Middle East peace process. Moscow has said it wants to host a peace summit to follow up on the United States-led initiative in Annapolis last year.

Lavrov discussed the summit plan when he met Syrian president Bashar al-Assad in Damascus, SANA news agency reported on March 20. The two leaders also discussed improving bilateral relations.

Moscow and Damascus have an increasingly close relationship, with Russia the main source of Syrian weapons.
