Despite recent attempts to reconcile with moderate Arab countries like Saudi Arabia and Egypt, official news organisations said the regime in Damascus will not cool relations with Tehran.

No one, including those Arab countries or western powers like the United States, should try to pressure Syria to distance itself from Iran, wrote Ileas Murad, editor-in-chief of the official newspaper Al-Baath.

Without naming any particular countries, Murad criticised certain Arab nations for “abandoning their resistance principles” and “rushing to make peace with Israel” by not more forcefully criticising its recent offensive in Gaza.

“Iran is an ally and that will not change,” wrote Murad.
