Prime Minister Muhammad Naji al-Utri praised his own country’s economic performance at an investment conference focusing on eastern Syria on March 2, SANA news agency reported.

Utri said gross domestic product had grown by about six per cent a year from 2005 to 2007. He also reported that exports had grown from 8.9 billion US dollars in 2005 to 10.4 billion dollars last year, and 70 per cent of exports were non-petroleum.

Tourism minister Saadallah Agha al-Qala reported that his ministry was taking steps to develop tourism in eastern Syria. The ministry has 43 projects in various towns, he reported. The ministry plans to build up religious, cultural, environmental and entertainment tourism in the region, according to al-Qala.

The March 2-3 conference attracted nearly 200 investors from 20 countries including Turkey, Kuwait, Saudi Arabia, China, Sweden and Iran.
