As Davlatsho Etiborov reports, Mayor Mahmadsaid Ubaidulloev has banned the raising of livestock including sheep and cattle, but also smaller creatures like poultry and rabbits. Pets like dogs and cats are exempt from the ban, which is for health and safety reasons.

Many people living in the low-rise outskirts of the city have a cow or two, or a few sheep.

Owners are unhappy at the loss of the food and income these animals represent, and say they cannot afford to replace this by purchasing dairy and other food products at current prices.
