Two roadside bombs were defused near the US embassy in the Afghan capital on January 30, officials said. The bombs were found hidden in a ditch about 300 yards from the heavily-guarded embassy compound, said Ebrar Ahmad, a senior official in Kabul. Violence has surged in Afghanistan, with 20 suicide bombers and dozens of roadside bombs in recent months.
