No Bread Shortage, Ministry Says

Syria Media Report, 16-May-08

To show that bread is being produced and there is no shortage, the ministry of trade and economy organised a media tour of modern, productive bakeries, the Syria News website reported on May 11.

The media campaign was launched after people began hoarding bread in anticipation of knock-on effects from rising fuel prices.

Deputy trade and economy minister Ghassan al-Eid insisted bread was widely available and prices had not increased.

The government has repeatedly stated that it would not raise bread prices.
