Two Magazines Censored
Syria Media Report, 22-Feb-08
The ministry of information has refused to distribute the February issue of the Society and Economics magazine because of an article that questioned the legality and ethics of Syrian officials applying for citizenship in other countries. The journalist, Ayman al-Shoufi, did not mention any names in the article but questioned the motives of officials who had sought dual citizenship, the independent Damascus-based Syrian Centre for Free Media and Freedom of Expression reported on February 17.
The centre also reported that the ministry censored the January 29 edition of the weekly Daboor magazine because of an article suggesting that parliament should explain when ministers or managers are fired. The article, titled “Why Syrians are the last to know”, was replaced with a piece about traffic laws.
