Tensions were heightened by the fact that the victim acknowledged having worked as a prostitute, which led some to voice prejudiced opinions about whether the man should have been charged.



Meanwhile, the convicted man’s mother says police tortured him into signing a rape confession, an allegation that investigators deny.



While the man’s lawyer and the judge who sat in the case differ over whether the verdict was sound, they appear to agree on one thing – there were flaws in the investigative process which need to be addressed.
