Electricity Rationing Enforced
Syria Media Report, 08-Jan-09
Towns across Syria have found themselves short of electricity in the last few weeks, as officials announced that power would have to be rationed on a regular basis, the pro-government website Syria News reported on December 21.
Syria News reported that many cities were already experiencing power cuts of up to five hours a day.
The minister for power, Ahmed Qusay Kayali, said a timetable for cuts across the country would shortly be made public.
He said rationing had become necessary as demand for electricity surged amid falling temperatures. In addition, two power stations had suffered breakdowns.
Kayali said his ministry planned to deal with the problem by bringing in Japanese experts to conduct repairs at the damaged units, and by working with the oil ministry to increase production of gas to fire power stations.
