Gunmen, reportedly wearing interior ministry uniforms, assassinated Lieutenant-General Amir Al-Hashimy, military advisor to the Iraqi president. Al-Hashimy was also the brother of the vice-president and head of the Sunni Islamic party. A statement from the party claimed that about ten cars belonging to interior ministry special forces surrounded the military advisor's home in the Suleikh neighborhood, north of Baghdad, prior to the killing. The Iraqi president, Jalal Talabani, and vice president, Adil Abdulmahdi, condemned the assassination as an attempt to wreck national reconciliation.
