A protest in Homs on March 5 denounced “the brutal massacres and war of extermination waged by Israel” in the Gaza Strip, and condemned “the international silence on these atrocities,” the Syrian national news agency SANA reported.

Arab student organisations at Damascus University staged a sit-in the same day in support of the Palestinian people and against “the massacres committed by Israel”, SANA said.

The students criticised the United States and the international community for failing to speak out about the Israeli military’s operation in Gaza. The protesters said that the United Nations Security Council “supports the murder and terrorism committed by Israel”.

[The UN Human Rights Council on March 6 condemned Israel's offensive, which Palestinians said had killed at least 120 people, and called on forces in Gaza to stop firing missiles into Israel. Hamas’ military wing in Gaza claimed responsibility for killing eight Israelis at a Jerusalem rabbinical seminary on March 7.]
