On September 9, the former chairman of the Coalition for Democracy and Civil Society and Democracy Edil Baisalov, was elected Secretary of the Social Democratic Party of Kyrgyzstan, which although in opposition is led by the current prime minister, Almazbek Atambaev.

Baisalov is a well-known human rights activist who acted as a spokesman for protesters during a large demonstration against official crime and corruption in April 2006.

Atambaev was named as prime minister in March 2007 as a concession to the opposition in the run-up to anti-government demonstrations which went ahead anyway the following month, and were led by former prime minister Felix Kulov.
