Parliament has denounced the kidnapping of one of its members, Tayseer al-Mashhadani, and seven of her bodyguards on July 1 while driving in al-Shaab district of Baghdad. The National Accord Front has asked parliament to suspend sessions in protest against the abduction, warning that it would pull out of the government if al-Mashhadani was not released. The front holds 44 of the 275 seats in the parliament. Parliament’s speaker Mahmood al-Mashhadani ruled out a suspension of the legislature’s work, arguing it was unclear what group was behind the abduction.
