A national forum of non-government organisations, NGOs, is to take place in Bishkek on June 15-16 to discuss how to strengthen their influence in Kyrgyz politics. It will be preceded, on June 6-9, by a conference to discuss the role of civil society in helping make the government budget more transparent and effective. Both meetings are expected to produce recommendations for the authorities, the opposition, the business community and the NGO sector.

According to the United Nations Human Development Report, there were over 11,000 officially registered NGOs in Kyrgyzstan last year. The number that actually function remains unclear; NBCentralAsia experts estimate there are somewhere between 50 and 1,000, depending on what criteria one uses.
