Five cases of bird flu have been detected in Afghanistan, United Nations and Afghan officials said on March 13, adding there is a high risk that it could be the deadly H5N1 virus. Azizullah Osmani, an official at the Afghan Agriculture and Animal Husbandry Ministry said that so far three cases of H5 bird flu have been detected in Kabul and two in the eastern province of Nangarhar. Addressing a press conference in Kabul, Osmani said, “Testing is still under way, and we have sent the samples of this virus to Italy for more testing.” The H5 bird flu is fatal only to birds but the H5N1 variant also claims human lives.
