Police arrest women leader over Jonathan biscuit
It was meant to be a sweet charity; but it ended on a sour note.
ThePeoples' Democratic Party (PDP)'s Women Leader at Shitta Estate, Mrs. Dupe Smith was detained by the police last Saturday for distributing customized Jonathan Biscuits.
Mrs. Smith was at the Rabiatu Primary School polling centre for the voters' accreditation exercise and shared biscuits with both PDP and other party faithfuls around, an action perceived by many of the voters as flouting the electoral rules.
Opposing party agents at the venue were enraged by Smith's conduct and, with the voters, loudly expressed displeasure at the last minute gesture. To them, Smith was illegally campaigning at the polls.
Security agents present at the scene were quick to respond to the incident. Smith was briefly interrogated before she was taken away by men of the Police Force.
A witness said the top PDP woman had been warned earlier not to hand out the snack but refused to listen insisting there was nothing wrong with being generous to the electorate on an election day.
