The authorities in Sulaimaniyah last year convicted 53 people in connection with drug smuggling, said Colonel Jalal Ameen, a senior official in the Sulaimaniyah security service. He said that 14 were sentenced to life imprisonment and the others handed jail terms of 2-15. The smuggling of drugs to Sulaimaniyah is a relatively new development and there is no statistical information available on the subject. Ameen said Iran was the main source of drugs entering the city.
